Review: Two Wines from the Niven Family and Baileyana Winery

Let's get the party started! I'm happy they used screwcaps on these wines, to lock in the flavor and aromatics of the fruit, and for easy access too. Screwcap closures no longer worry me. I've had too many bottles of wine ruined by natural cork. Bottles of wine sealed with screwcaps also indicate that the wine is a buy me drink me wine. Should't they all be ready to drink? Theses wines were a pleasure to open and I enjoyed them both. What a great way to end this fun tasting from the California Wine Club - details below. Treat your friends to some Tangent Viognier. 1st Review: Tangent Viognier 2010 I like the clean look of this label. It hints at the wine inside the bottle. The Tangent Viognier had a clean nose, with peach and pear, a whiff of honey and orange blossom, very pleasing, quite feminine. The enticing aromas led to flavors of peach and pear, with gentle toast. Creamy mouth feel.  I liked the finish, it had lingering stone fruit, a touch of minerality....

Review: 2 Wines from Paso Robles Winery, Tobin James Cellars

Two wonderful Tobin James Cellars wines, courtesy of California Wine Club. Two Wonderful Wines from Tobin James Cellars. Tobin James does not submit their wines to competitions or for review. It was my pleasure this month to learn why; because they don't need to. This California winery is located in Paso Robles. When Tobin started his winery, there were only 7 wineries in Paso Robles, today there are 250. His commitment to making wine earned him the “Wine Person of the Year 2010” award from the Paso Robles Wine alliance. The longevity of this winery looks bright, Mr. James son is studying winemaking at Fresno State University. Tobin James Radiance 2010 Monterey County, Chardonnay This was my first experience tasting Chardonnay from Paso Robles. With a clear gold color, it opened with a toasty nose and a toasty finish. Swirling the wine in my glass, a subtle spice aroma tickled my nose. It had delicate flavors of ginger and fig, with a hint of tartness in the back palate. ...

Expanding my palate to California. “You ought to never consider retiring from work, because remaining engaged in some creative occupation makes life so much more full” - Fess Parker California Wine Club Shipment Premier Club Gift. As a life-long Washington resident, I drink Washington wine. This blog is “Wild 4 Washington Wine”  after all, so drinking local comes easy. Yes, the occasional bottle from Australia and Spain grace my table, but not often. That began to change in 2010 when I started attending the Wine Bloggers Conferences . I was exposed to many new wines from across the United States and the world. There is a huge world of wine out there. Since 2010, especially since last year, I've sampled wines from California, Texas, Missouri, Virginia, New York, Spain, France, Italy, Chile and Argentina. Tasting all of these wines has pushed me off my comfortable bench, where I was drinking exclusively Washington wines. The wine critic and author Paul Gregutt recently w...
