Podcast - A Special Conversation and Tasting with Siren Song Wines Lake Chelan AVA @sirensongwines

Companion post to the podcast - "Successful Techies to Lake Chelan Wine Makers: Kevin & Holly Brown, Siren Song"

Siren Song Grand Opening and Release Party July 2nd.

We were fortunate to receive pre-lease bottles of the Siren Song Wines 2013 The Muse Sparkling Brut Pinot Noir prior to this special #WineMuse podcast. We had to taste this wine since it shares the name of our Wine Muse podcast. My tasting notes are below.

Listen to the podcast - Siren Song Wines.

Husband and wife team, Holly and Kevin Brown, legends in High Tech circles for their founding of Visio, Symform, and Tableau Software, changed gears to pursue a creative, shared passion of food and wine. They started Siren Song Wines and the Foodie website, The Brown Lounge. Lake Chelan, Washington is one of the most scenic areas in the world, and the location of their new Mediterranean-inspired wine tasting room and event center. Part winery, restaurant, and event facility, this will be the perfect venue for celebrations and weddings.

On this special podcast, hosts Linda Rez and William Pollard talked to Holly and Kevin about their life journeys, with all the twists, turns, and inspirations, and their plans for the future.

Pointing passion and personal business into something they love, wine and food, the goal for Siren Song wines is to create a super high quality European restaurant experience. They plan on hosting event based food occasions. This will not by your typical restaurant service. Instead the focus will be on thematic food ideas, with special experiences for that day or event.

Tasting Notes 2013 Sparkling Brut Pinot Noir The Muse 100% Estate Grown Lake Chelan:

Color: White gold.
Nose: Delicate toast, essence of honey and apple blossom.
Palate: Fine foamy perlage, hard bubbles on lips. Enticing grip on tongue, fresh, apple, unripe pear, brioche, pleasant tartness, almost creamy on the apple crisp finish. A bright, delicately nuanced sparkler, with a lovely mouth feel and tasty crisp finish. Lovely flow down the palate to the ears. Big like.

Thoughts: Fresh and light, fun to sip and savor. Well suited for celebrations and parties. Palate cleansing too for multi-course affairs. Tasted with salmon spread, creaminess and bubbles emphasized with food. Big like. Impressed. You will want to share this lovely wine with someone special. Strongly Recommended.

Tasting Notes Siren Song Raving Beauty 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon:

Color: Garnet edged, dark plum core.
Nose: Rich, broad, blackberry focus to dark cherry, tar, candied. Yum.
Palate: Candied cherry to black currant, fine tannin, focus mid-palate, medium body, black cherry, apple tannin and good acidity into the finish. Approachable at open.

At 15 minutes: Dusty chocolate, pepper mill added to the nose, cherry, with clove and mint in background. Dried cherries, mint, wonderfully dry on the tongue, tannin sucked out moisture up to the gums, cherry and mint-chocolate into the finish, pleasant acid sealed the deal. Very tasty. Would be wonderful with a steak.

At one hour: Captivating nose, swirl of dark berry, chocolate, brown sugar, clove and light spice aromatics. Lovely integrated flavors swirled in the mouth, cherry, chocolate, mint, clove, concentrated fruit focused to the front with a note of orange marmalade on the dry, tasty finish. Well done.

At three hours: Quite rich and dark, cherry, blueberry, sweetness, very dry, with cherry compote, balsamic and chocolate. Another glass please.

Day two: Heady loveliness, seductive, rounded, brambly with dark fruit, wonderful mouth feel, tacky tannin on the tongue and teeth, blueberry compote at front with tar and spike of flavor mid-palate, black tea, mint, sarsaparilla and dried cherry on the long dry finish. Oh my.

Thoughts: A gentle, skilled hand was involved in the making of this wine. Focus on the fruit, not the oak. Well crafted and balanced. Well done and enjoyable alone or with food. Naturally I paired this big wine with a big steak. Strongly Recommended.

Siren Song Estate Vineyards

1. Grand Cru Estate Vineyard Lake Chelan AVA.

With 7 acres under production with vines that are 20+ years old - some of the oldest in the Chelan Valley. This small vineyard is meticulously managed and yields are kept low in order to produce fruit of superb quality and intensity.

Chelan terroir is truly exceptional- providing basalt ladened soil and alluvium deposited thousands of years ago from The Great Missoula floods. Ideal growing conditions in Lake Chelan with 300+ days of sunshine each year.

AVA: Lake Chelan
Location: Chelan, WA
Elevation: 1,130 feet
Year Planted: 1992
Acres Planted: 7
Varietals Planted: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah.

2. NEW: Grand Cru estate vineyard in the Lake Chelan AVA.

This is a newer project with 21 acres planned.

Elevation: 1,080 feet
Year Planted: work in progress
Acres Planted: 21
Varietals Planted: Chardonnay, Dolcetto, Sauvignon Blanc, Albariño.

3. Grand Cru Estate Vineyard in the Walla Walla AVA.

This project is a joint venture with the Betz Family Winery. The vineyard is 40 acres and is located in the SeVein district - home to Leonetti, L’Ecole Nº 41, Pepper Bridge, Doubleback, and Figgins.

SeVein terroir is truly exceptional- providing windblown glacial loess draping the basalt underlayment - especially at the upper elevations. Alluvial sedimentation laced in eddies, basins and throughout the landscape. Walla Walla is widely recognized as the 2nd most important wine growing region in the U.S.

AVA: Walla Walla
Location: Walla Walla, WA
Elevation: 1,150 feet
Year Planted: 2015
Acres Planted: 20
Varietals Planted: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot.

4. Grand Cru Estate Vineyard in The Rocks AVA.

Only a few miles from the SeVein vineyard, this project is a second joint venture with the Betz Family Winery. The vineyard is 20 acres covered in stones from the ancient Walla Walla river bed. The Rocks AVA is home to other vineyards including Cayuse, Buty, Figgins, Saviah, et al.

Only 4.9 square miles in size, The Rocks AVA terroir is truly exceptional. The area is a bed of fist-sized, river-smoothed basalt cobblestones. Stretching down several hundred feet below the surface, the stones are so heavy and densely packed that crowbars are used to plant the vines.

AVA: The Rocks
Location: Walla Walla, WA
Elevation: 850 feet
Year Planted: 2005
Acres Planted: 20
Varietals Planted: Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc

If you have not visited Lake Chelan, then you need to make plans now. Siren Song is the newest treasure to enjoy in beautiful Lake Chelan. They make wonderful wines too. Contact the winery for event details and plan your next wine vacation in Lake Chelan.

Review: Sho Chiku Bai, Unfiltered Sake

Last month in Seattle, I purchased a bottle of Nigori sake at Uwajimaya. Uwajimaya is one of the largest Asian grocery retailers in the Pacific Northwest. I’ve been visiting Uwajimaya for almost 40 years. When I was much younger, I’d buy model ship and plane kits, Japanese comic books (manga) and I never left without at least one steaming Humbow in hand. Today I buy the manga for my son; while I still enjoy the tasty steamed Humbows, now I never leave without at least one bottle of Sake in hand. Uwajimaya has a terrific selection of imported sake. This most recent visit, I left with a bottle of Sho Chiku Bai Nigori sake. Nigori sake is generally the sweetest of all sakes, with a fruity nose and a mild flavor, making a great drink to complement spicy foods or as a dessert wine. Typical sake is usually filtered to remove grain solids left behind after the fermentation process; however Nigori sake remains unfiltered, resulting in a cloudier beverage. Before serving, the bottle must

My Current State of Wine

"Do I still work in the wine industry?" Like many of you, the Covid pandemic altered my life trajectory. Today, I am going to re-cap where I am in the wine industry. My story will bounce back and forth for context. Remember, I like to connect the dots. The Walter Clore Wine and Culinary Center in Prosser, Washington. First, everyone asks me, what happened to the Walter Clore Wine and Culinary Center (Clore Center)? Good question. The Clore Center, located in Prosser, Washington, birthplace of Washington wine, opened in 2014 as a not for profit. The primary mission of the Clore Center was to promote " Washington state wine ." I began working at the Clore Center in October 2015. My last title was, Wine Education Coordinator . We finally, sadly, closed our doors in November 2020.  It was my sincerest pleasure to work at the Clore Center for five years. I made many friends in the industry and in the community. I met many people from around the country and from around th

A Special Oregon Pinot Noir with Eastern North Carolina Inspired Ribs #OTBN #winePW 10

Open That Bottle Night - A great excuse for a Wine Pairing Weekend.  February 28th was Open That Bottle Night - I selected a bottle of wine I helped blend using barrel samples of Pinot Noir from R. Stuart winery in McMinville, Oregon. I was saving this bottle for a special occasion and knew it was likely time to open and drink. I hoped it had improved. "Blending wine is no task for mere mortals."   - William Pollard Jr.  Our Wine Pairing Weekend group decided Open That Bottle Night would be an appropriate occasion to pair our selected bottle of wine with something special as well. After some consideration, I decided North Carolina ribs would likely pair well with my special bottle of Oregon Pinot Noir. For this post I'll review the wine first, then provide the recipe, and wrap up with the results of this wine + food pairing. *Note: What is Open That Bottle Night?
