This morning, I wanted to share with you what a pleasure it was to meet winemaker Chris Sherry and Director Miguele de Quadros-Sherry of Elentone wine. Chris is a tall, soft spoken gentleman, and a truly talented winemaker. Yesterday, he was guest winemaker at the Walter Clore Wine and Culinary Center in Prosser, Washington and was pouring his 2013 Elentone sparkling wine for tasting room visitors.

In the United Kingdom, sparkling wine is often referred to as “Fizz.”

Chris is originally from sunny England, he studied winemaking in France and was involved in several sparkling winemaking projects in the UK. He is an official judge for the international sparkling wine competition, Effervescents du Monde, held annually in Dijon. He left the United Kingdom to craft sparkling wine in Washington State.

Southern England is the up and coming sparkling winemaking region in the world. UK sales of Champagne are actually down 10% because of the consumption of domestic bubbles.

Elentone is styled after a French wine we know as “Champagne.” The composition of Elentone is a classic blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. My first impression was, “delicious” and “tastes like Champagne.” Most of my guests and many of my readers know how much I enjoy sparkling wines. Impressed? Yes.

Spirit Review: Ole Smokey Tennessee Moonshine White Lightnin' @OleSmoky

Today I have crossed the line from wine to spirits. At 100 proof the Ole Smokey Tennessee Moonshine is definitely turning up the volume (ABV 50%). Review: Sho Chiku Bai, Unfiltered Sake

Last month in Seattle, I purchased a bottle of Nigori sake at Uwajimaya. Uwajimaya is one of the largest Asian grocery retailers in the Pacific Northwest. I’ve been visiting Uwajimaya for almost 40 years. When I was much younger, I’d buy model ship and plane kits, Japanese comic books (manga) and I never left without at least one steaming Humbow in hand.
