2012 Stoney Lonesome Zero Degree Dry Riesling by Three Brothers Wineries & Estates, Seneca Lake #FLXwine

Riesling
Finger Lakes Rocks the Riesling!

It was my pleasure to receive this wine to taste and review at home. This Riesling is one of four samples I received featuring Finger Lakes 2012 Rieslings. While I assume you know that the Finger Lakes wine region is in Central New York, it doesn't hurt to mention that the Finger Lakes region is just south of Lake Ontario. The deep Finger Lakes run North-South and provide premium growing on the eastern and western slopes. Riesling is King in the Finger Lakes.
"From dry to sweet versions, the Finger Lakes is slowly but steadily cementing its reputation as this country's best source for Riesling."
- James Molesworth, Senior Editor, Wine Spectator

As it says on their website: "Four Degrees of Riesling" created to cater to your individual preference. Designed to showcase the versatility of the Finger Lakes Riesling grape, and the wine's unique ability to be finished either dry or sweet. Your selections range from Dry (0) to Semi-Dry (1), Semi Sweet (2) and Sweet (3).

This is the Dry Riesling (0), as in not sweet.

Tasting Notes:

Color: Clear, palest gold.
Nose: Mineral, delicate honey-suckle, fresh apple/pear notes, cinnamon.
Palate: Honey, a lot of honey at first, crisp Fuji apple, dry. Finish was fresh, crisp Fuji apple. I like this wine, especially since it is not an acid monster, but beautifully balanced. This was a dry, crisp, refreshing wine. Just my speed.

Thoughts: Pair with fried chicken, fried fish, Caesar salad, fresh oysters and sashimi. A wonderful wine to start the evening. This is the kind of wine I think of when I think Finger Lakes Riesling; dry, minerality, crisp, refreshing. Later in the evening, this wine had a steely quality I also enjoyed. I believe 2012 is an excellent vintage. Recommended.

* Update: Day two this wine is more focused to the front palate. Intense fruit and mineral make for a lip smacker with a longer finish. All smiles my friends.

About Three Brothers Wineries

Located in Geneva, New York, Three Brothers Wineries has 11 acres of Estate Riesling, at the Northeast end of Seneca Lake. Four acres were planted to vine in 1980, another seven acres were planted in 2006. A native to Seneca Falls, Winemaker Justin Paolicelli works with Winemaker Rick Clement to create Three Brothers wines. Vineyard manager John Wilkins began working at the winery in 2012. Located on the Estate are three wineries and a microbrewery: Stony Lonesome Wine Cellars is more traditional in style, Passion Feet Vineyard and Wine Barn is geared toward the "romantic" at heart serving semi-sweet wine, Bagg Dare Wine Co. is modeled after a 1920's Louisiana bayou Road Stop and sits on a pond. You may have noticed the names of all three wineries on the label of this Riesling. For me a touch confusing at first.

Spirit Review: Ole Smokey Tennessee Moonshine White Lightnin' @OleSmoky

Today I have crossed the line from wine to spirits. At 100 proof the Ole Smokey Tennessee Moonshine is definitely turning up the volume (ABV 50%). "Moonshine, white lightning, mountain dew, hooch, and Tennessee white whiskey are terms used to describe high-proof distilled spirits, generally produced illicitly...The word "moonshine" is believed to derive from the term "moonrakers" used for early English smugglers and the clandestine (i.e., by the light of the moon) nature of the operations of illegal Appalachian distillers who produced and distributed whiskey." Source Wikipedia My family is no stranger to Moonshine.  That is, my great-grandfather and grandfather were not strangers. Evidently the family occasionally produced their own spirits on their Oregon ranch. My grandfather told me about his younger brother getting into his dads stash with predictable results. Grandmother also told me stories about midnight runs and secretive deliveries d...

Review | Rediscover New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc 2022 Vintage

New Zealand Wine Puts a Smile on my Face My friends know I am a huge fan of New Zealand wine. In 2012 I became a little obsessed and created a New Zealand wine blog with my friend Julie. We called it " Kiwi Daydreaming " because we could not stop daydreaming about New Zealand wine. Today, I am sharing my thoughts on three Marlborough, New Zealand, Sauvignon Blanc wines. Each wine is distinct. Each is delicious in its own way. If you know me, you know that I cannot review any wine without including wine and food pairings. Those are included as well! About Appellation Marlborough Wine: Appellation Marlborough Wine™ was established in 2018 with a strict certification process that the region’s producers are able to apply for. AMW is trademarked in all key global wine markets and it is the legal recognition that sets it apart from other new world certification practices. Wines bearing the Appellation Marlborough Wine (AMW) quality mark provide consumers the following guarantees: O...

Three Albariños and Several Food Pairings | Taste Rías Baixas

As promised, more reviews of  Albariño wines from Rías Baixas.  My previous post ( My Favorite White Wines this Summer are from DO Rias Baixas ), I emphasized more traditional food pairings, grilled shrimp, Ceviche, and watermelon. This time, I wanted to try some different pairings to see how well Albariño wines would match. I love seafood, but I was curious about the flexibility of this variety. My test pairings began with a series of mini quiche I made at home, spinach, hamburger, tomato, dill and steak. Following are my tastings notes on the wines and the food pairing results. Results were mixed. Map of DO Rías Baixas and sub-zones. While twelve grape varieties are permitted in DO Rías Baixas, the white Albariño grape represents 96% of all plantings. Albariño refreshes as a drinking wine and appeals to diverse cuisine. Albariño from Galicia delivers for me on many levels. Bright acidity, refreshing citrus flavors and that compelling salinity which in...
